I wanted to write something really catchy to introduce myself and the farm as the first blog post. I’m new to blogging, so this probably isn’t going to be as interesting as I had hoped. But let me give you the basics:
My name is Sheila, my husband, 2 kids and I live in West Granby where in 2007 we built on the back acreage of my family farm. My dad’s great-grandparents and grandparents moved here when his uncle (their oldest) was 2 weeks old in April of 1913. They did OK while my grandparents and their 5 boys lived and worked here with my great-grandfather, my aunts and 1 uncle. Things really went downhill when that youngest (single) son inherited in the mid-late 50’s and had to try to do it all himself after my grandparents and their boys moved out. I’m trying to bring the farm back, it might be unrealistic (I don’t have a huge pool of free child labor either LOL), but we’ll see. We've been expanding and adding new growing areas (raised beds since there's so much ledge) and improving the soil each year, pruning the remaining ancient apple trees (that were here when my family bought the place), and planting perennials like blackberries, raspberries, strawberries and blueberries. I'm also growing things my ancestors never dreamed of, like chile peppers, Asian greens, and edamame, though heirloom tomatoes remain my obsession.
This blog is going to be a little bit of everything, some tips on growing, some recipes (canning and cooking), maybe a few laughs, a few rants. Just like my crazy life.... You’re welcome to come along for the ride!
