The girls enjoyed the sunshine for a bit the past few days - Wednesday I held the old vinyl fencing up around the coop and they got out and back in themselves once I opened the big door and started cleaning out the wood shavings to compost. Then when Frank got home he put 100 lbs of sand in since he just happened to have some construction sand he bought years ago. I'm hoping that stays cleaner than the wood shavings. They started taking dust baths immediately (it had been more like mud baths while they were out).
Thursday I put some temporary fence posts in (the ground is either still frozen or there are a lot of rocks right by the coop because those 2 were hard to get in!) and covered them with the branches I had used over the strawberry beds. Miss Joy stayed right with them to make sure no one snuck out, and nothing else got in. I think it looks like something a castaway on a desert island would build - though hopefully theirs would be a bit more weather-tight!
I let them out this morning since we are supposed to have some rain this afternoon but after a couple of hours it was very hard to get them back inside. Twilight (the Barred Rock) got out of the enclosure after I missed her and Miss Joy caught up with her halfway across the lawn.
Construction of the real run starts this weekend, weather permitting!
